Description:
Harry Potter
Welcome all to a literary analysis of the Harry Potter series, written by J.K. Rowling.
Your guides along the journey will be your two dear friends, Keebler Elf and Phoenix, and the Honorable Thomas C. Foster, author of How to Read Literature Like a Professor.
We don't know where we're going. Perhaps we shall end up with some meaningful conclusion about the nature of life and of human nature, or perhaps we won't. We actually don't care. We do, however, plan on making many insightful and meaningful observations along the journey, and hopefully have a great deal of fun.
Please join the bandwagon -- the more the merrier!
Now, fasten your seat belts, put on your thinking caps, and hold on tight.
May the force be with us.

Introduction:

Greetings, fellow lovers of literature, and welcome to foster_hp! If you enjoy reading, Harry Potter, and/or in-depth discussions of books from an analytical and critical point of view (or better yet, all three), then you've come to the right place.

At foster_hp, our goal is to use the methods taught to us by Mr. Foster, author of How to Read Literature Like a Professor and apply it in insightful ways to the great works of J.K. Rowling: the Harry Potter series. Consider this community as an online socratic seminar, where you can read and/or post analyses for the HP books, and share opinions with other people of similar interests. For more information, please refer to the first post in the community.

How the community works:

In general, there will be regular posts by the two mods, keebler_elf528 (Keebler Elf)and myself, garnet_phoenix (Phoenix) who will take turns analyzing the Harry Potter books from the very beginning, chapter by chapter. You are then free to comment on the analyses, make some of your own, and discuss how you think the various devices employed by Rowling affects her work as a whole, how it relates to the themes in Harry Potter, how it aids in plot development, etc., etc. The possibilities are endless!

Rules and regulations:

Both Keebler Elf and I are fairly laid-back people, but we do have a few requests:

1. Posts not relating to chapter analyses are welcome, but please be relevant and stay on-topic (that is to say, anything non-HP related should not be posted here).

2. Please do your best to use proper English spelling and grammar. This is, after all, a literary community. We are aware everyone makes mistakes, and that we also make mistakes. However, intentional usage of "chat lingo," "internet speak," "l33t" etc. will not be tolerated.

3. Please do not flame other members, or the mods. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions about literature and what they think a certain passage/symbol/device means. Follow the golden rule of respect.

4. Please do not post just to give your opinion on how much you love/hate Harry Potter. All posts should have some meaningful thought behind it that will initiate or move discussions forward.

5. Have fun! Unlike when sitting in an English class, you're not being judged for how well you can analyse literature. We welcome any and all thoughts and theories, no matter how unusual they may seem, and value original thoughts. So give your ideas a chance!

Miscellaneous things to keep in mind:

NOTE: This community contains SPOILERS about the Harry Potter series. If you do not want to find out about critical parts of the plot you have yet to read, then please come back at another time.

Thank you for visiting and we hope you enjoy your stay!
